While it is the hottest of the deserts in the u.s., it contains much more plant life than the sahara. True deserts have very few plants. Light winds occur often which evaporates any type of moisture that is typically going to develop in them.
This helps keep the plants cool during the hot desert days as it helps less water evaporate out of it.
